General Requirements for Police Officer

An applicant must be 19 years of age to apply. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen with no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving violence or moral turpitude. Applicants must possess a valid Alabama driver's license or be able to obtain one if a license is issued by another state. Applicants must possess a diploma from an accredited high school or a GED.

Applicants with a high school diploma or GED must complete an ACT Workeys Assessment (BAT) Exam. The BAT Exam is offered at any Community College in Alabama. Applicants must meet all State of Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission requirements and the Enterprise Police Department requirements.

Duty Assignments

Upon graduation from the Academy, recruits will be assigned to the Patrol Division. The recruit will remain in Patrol the duration of the yearlong probationary period. After the probationary period is over, the officer may apply for additional duty assignments, transfer, or promotion to one of the Department's career specialties such as:

• Detective (CID)
• Firearms Instructor
• Less Lethal Instructor
• K9 Unit
• Narcotics Unit
• Drug Recognition Expert (DRE)
• School Resource Officer
• Translator
• Traffic Homicide Unit

Police Academy

Applicants who are hired, will be sent to Basic Police Academy for 560 hours of intense training. Officers must successfully graduate the Academy in order to start their new career in Law Enforcement.

Physical Training (PT) Requirements

Physical training requires a great deal of physical strength and stamina. The physical abilities test may include such tasks as:

• Complete 22 Push-Ups (Within 1 Minute)
• Complete 25 Sit-Ups (Within 1 Minute)
• 1.5 Mile Run (Within 15 minutes 28 seconds)
• Police Obstacle Course
  • 165 lb. dummy drag
  • Scale 6 foot fence
  • 5 yard balance beam
  • Push police vehicle 15 feet

Field Training Assignment

After successful completion of the Police Academy training, recruits are sworn in and assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO) in the Patrol Division under the Field Training Program. The Field Training Program is designed to produce a highly trained and motivated police officer. This program links academy training with on the job training of a police officer in the field. A minimum of 13 weeks is spent working with a Field Training Officer.
